The Franschhoek wine valley is synonymous with the von Arnim Family who have been an important part of the community for many a decade.
With multiple public holidays dotted around the month of April, as well as important religious and school holidays, it’s been a wonderful opportunity to spend more time connecting with family. It’s been so fun to welcome families and friends throughout the month for wine tasting and experiences in our restaurant. It’s a joy to see everyone exploring our ranges, falling in love with new finds or savouring their firm family favourites.
This got us thinking about the founding family of Haute Cabrière and which wines are their favourites … We caught up with the von Arnims on the wines they’ve loved most and what they’re drinking right now.
Matriarch of our Franschhoek winery and asked for by name by many visitors to the tasting room!
Hildegard has a soft spot for Cap Classique, it being the first wine released by Haute Cabrière cellar in 1986, and the wine style celebrating 50 years in South Africa this year. ‘The Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose is a joy for the eye with its pink hue,’ says Hildegard.
The name brings back many fond memories of co-founder Achim von Arnim’s grandmother Theodora, who when seeing this wine in the cellar for the first time exclaimed, ‘Belle Rose!’ Translated into English from French– beautiful rose.
Theodora was known to drive to Arniston to buy fresh hand-harvested oysters for special occasions, paired with Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose – she was definitely on to something!
Pioneer, founder, and influential voice in the wine fraternity, a man of few words, but bold actions.
Achim on the Haute Cabrière Chardonnay Unwooded, ‘This wine is simply delicious.’ It was launched during last year and is the first single varietal Chardonnay in the Haute Cabrière range. It’s perfectly balanced, rich, elegant and full of flavour. Achim’s love for Chardonnay sparked during his time in Burgundy, as a student. Having him celebrate this wine is a testament to his vision behind creating Haute Cabrière.
Achim is equally passionate about the Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir Rèserve. During the global lockdown, as fans from around the world dug deep into their wine racks, older vintages were discovered, shared and given rave reviews, affirming Achim’s drive to create quality wines.
Achim recommends ending a meal with a block of dark chocolate, and the final sips of Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir Rèserve – something he learned from French-South African chef, currently heading up The Food Barn in Noordhoek, Franck Dangereux.
Cellar Master and custodian of Haute Cabrière’s wines is charismatic Takuan von Arnim who took over the reins in the cellar in 2013. His passion for wine continues to expand the ranges of Haute Cabrière with innovation and integrity within each bottle.
Takuan conceptualised and created the Haute Collection with Winemaker and Viticulturist, Tim Hoek, in 2018 launching the range in 2019. This collection showcases skill, creativity and a pioneering spirit. exploring site-specific Franschhoek wines. Hands down the Haute Collection Chardonnay in this collection is tops for Takuan. ‘It’s perfection,’ he comments. Takuan’s perfect pairing is with Sunday afternoons and time spent with the love of your life, in his case, the beautiful and talented businesswoman, Christiana von Arnim.
An honorary part of the von Arnim family, Tim has been an integral part of the farm and our wines for many years now as he works closely with Takuan in the cellar vintage after vintage.
Tim’s absolute favourite Cap Classique is the Pierre Jourdan Blanc de Blancs. This Cap Classique has a specific blend of vineyards and the only Cap Classique in the range matured in oak to give more structure, mouthfeel and body – making it an excellent choice to pair with food. The 2016 vintage is just about ready to be released and showcases a fine mousse, citrus & lime, as well as light oak notes.
P.S. Tim is using a 2016 ‘quality control’ bottle of Blanc de Blancs to celebrate his 12th wedding anniversary this month!
When asked for a show of hands, the rest of the Haute Cabrière extended family unanimously voted for the Haute Cabrière Arnim Family Rèserve. Launched just before South Africa went into lockdown, this red wine blend of Syrah and Pinot is the first of its kind in South Africa. What is truly special about the blend is that both these varietals complement and let each other shine.
At your next family lunch – invite the von Arnims over in this remarkable Arnim Family Rèserve.
