Hollywood isn’t the only industry with an award season … Every year, as spring arrives in the Cape, the wine industry’s most notable competitions and Masters of Wine announce their annual picks for must-drink wines, and outstanding winery experiences.
While our wines have enjoyed continual success, we believe the real reward is in the enjoyment of the drinker. This year however, our wines have achieved outstanding awards– so we’re taking a moment to show our team just how proud of them we are!
“Our spirited cellar team works hard to ensure that quality craftsmanship from vine to glass is always at the forefront,” comments Director of Wine, Takuan von Arnim. “I am enormously proud of all we have achieved as a team, and look forward to what the future for our wine estate holds!”
We have recently joined the acclaimed ranks of Certified Heritage Vineyards in South Africa through the Old Vine Project! The oldest block of Chardonnay on our estate, from French Clone (Burgundy) CY 95, was planted in 1983, and makes us one of just four OVP certified Chardonnay producers in South Africa and the only Certified Old Vine Chardonnay in Franschhoek. We’re proud as punch!
With the introduction of the Haute Collection range of wines in 2019, we began to produce wines exclusively from this now 39-year-old vineyard block: the Haute Collection Chardonnay and Haute Collection Amphora Chardonnay.
World-renowned Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, released his much-anticipated 2022 annual report on the progression and quality of South African wines. Haute Cabrière is thrilled to have received over 90 points for the six wines submitted for this year’s report. These results are a testament to the skill of our cellar and vineyard teams, as well as the quality that has come to be celebrated by our South African and international community of wine-lovers.
Our recently certified Old-Vine Chardonnay wines from the Haute Collection are of particular note as the only Old-Vine Chardonnays from Franschhoek.

Terroir refers to the soil and growing conditions of the vines which result in a unique blend of characteristics. Our winemaking philosophy is founded on terroir – sun, soil, vine, man. Renowned wine writer, Marius Labuschagne, identified a gap in the competition landscape in 2002 and created Novare Terroir to celebrate and acknowledge the art of showcasing the terroirs of the Cape.
Our Haute Collection Pinot Noir 2020 won best Pinot Noir in the Franschhoek district, an immense accomplishment for our team.
This year’s Chardonnay Report convened by Winemag.co.za and sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient is now out. There were 80 entries from 59 producers and these were tasted blind (labels out of sight) by a three-person panel, scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale.
Our Haute Collection Chardonnay 2020 received 91 points.
