Celebrating the very best of Pinot Noir …
Pinot Noir as a varietal is an integral aspect of our origin story. One of two Burgundian varietals to which we have dedicated our cellar and vineyards, we fall more in love with Pinot Noir with every new vintage, pioneering blend, glass of rosé and bottle of Cap Classique. Find out what makes Pinot Noir so important to us…
What is Pinot Noir anyway?
This varietal has small, dark berries with a thin and delicate skin which translates to less juice being extracted as well as a lighter colour (wine receives its colour from the skins – less skin, lighter colour). It’s known as ‘the heartbreak grape’ because the vines are extremely susceptible to the elements of nature requiring a lot of attention, time and energy – but one bad bout of weather could be the end of your vintage. An extreme amount of care and many watchful eyes are needed during the growing process and maintaining Pinot Noir vines.
“During harvest time, when Cellar Masters and Winemakers look frazzled and tired – it’s probably because they work with Pinot Noir!” – Takuan von Arnim
Pinot Noir as a wine is dry and elegant making it a light, well-structured and a complex wine. It is amongst the most versatile and stylistically diverse grapes in the world. From Cap Classiques to Rosé, blends, oaked, unoaked, aged or young … there is a kaleidoscope of shades when it comes to Pinot Noir.
Franschhoek is one of the few regions in South Africa that produces exceptional quality Pinot Noir wines, despite the warm summers (Pinot Noir favours cooler temperatures). Summers in the Franschhoek wine valley require careful canopy management to ensure the growing conditions are slow and even. When it’s done right, the resulting wines are elegant, balanced, and full of flavour.
“Pinot Noir’s evolution during the 12 months in barrel is fascinating. What starts off as a youthful, bright and fruit-driven wine, transitions slowly into a complex masterpiece, evolving month after month in barrel,’ comments Winemaker Tim Hoek.
