With outdoor gatherings being more appealing than ever this summer, we are anticipating a lot of picnicking in the near future. From lavish, Pinterest-worthy spreads to impromptu sunset chasing with just a block of cheese and a bottle of wine, our summer schedule is going to include many hours of open-air socialising.
Here are 3 of the best places around Cape Town I love to enjoy for a (socially distanced) get together this summer. Each perfectly paired with a wine I adore from Haute Cabrière to complete the special moment in the South African sunshine.
This tiny alcove fills up as sunset approaches, so make sure you arrive in time to find parking and a spot on the rocks. From your seat on the boulders, you have a 360° view of the sun setting over the Atlantic straight ahead, the Twelve Apostles to your left, Lion’s Head to your right and Table Mountain behind you. It’s a truly breathtaking setting, and the perfect place to marvel at the many tones of the setting sun, as the mountains are washed in shades of pinks and purples, while the ocean turns to liquid gold.
Pairs perfectly with: A soft picnic blanket (those boulders can get pretty hard after a while) a wicker basket, a cold bottle of Haute Cabrière’s Tranquille and a selection of cheese and charcuterie.
From this vantage point high above the city, you can see all the way up the West Coast on a clear day. Crowds of locals and visitors alike gather on the slopes of the hill on a good day, to bask in the late-afternoon warmth of the summer sun. It’s a great place for larger groups, as there’s ample space, as well as access to public restrooms. Crowds tend to disperse quickly after the sun goes down, so it’s best not to linger alone.
Pairs perfectly with: A group of friends, mix-and-match blankets and baskets thrown into the back of the car on the run, a selection finger snacks and a couple of bottles of Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir Rosé.
One of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world, located at the foot of one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. There’s no better place for kids to run free and fill their lungs with fresh air, while parents make up for the many hours of chats and laughs missed this year. There’s more than enough space to enjoy a mask-free afternoon in the safe space of your picnic blanket.
Pairs perfectly with: Long afternoons, long-lost friends, much-loved family members, packed lunches and a few bottles of Haute Cabriere’s Pierre Jourdan Cap Calssiques.
